They were at the academy at different times. She was older. He was quieter. They shared a classroom once, briefly, the way students do when schedules overlap and no one thinks to remember it.

One afternoon he set a piece of chocolate on her desk without a word. She ate it without thinking. The warmth hit her strangely — slow, heavy, like velvet pulled across her chest. Her face went red before she could stop it.

She never found out if it was intentional. She never asked. Two years later the Joint Councils selected her for the Tracing Party and she learned his full name for the first time in a briefing room, printed at the top of a file.

She carried a bag like this one to every class, every briefing, every early morning she spent alone with her maps — long before she knew his name would become her mission.
